After years of consideration, Sun has decided to release the source code of Java under the GPL license. Sun plans to release the Java source code under the GPLv2 license this coming Monday. Many open-source software projects, including Linux, use this licensing model. The Java.net website, operated by Sun, will provide the source code for the Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME) and the Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE). Sun has already open-sourced the server-side Java Platform Enterprise Edition software through its GlassFish project. However, it has changed the license for GlassFish from the "Common Development and Distribution License" (CDDL) to GPLv2.
