What is Cloud Computing?

If one day, the amount of data available on the Internet were to increase to a thousand times or even more than it is now, what would our PCs look like? How far will hardware evolve, or perhaps, personal computers won't need to handle such massive amounts of data processing at all?

Cloud computing (CloudComputing) presents another possibility.

Cloud computing is an emerging business computing model. By leveraging the high-speed transmission capabilities of the Internet, the data processing process is moved from personal computers or servers to clusters of computers on the Internet. These computers are ordinary industrial standard servers, managed by a large data processing center, which allocates computational resources according to customer needs, achieving results comparable to those of supercomputers.

"The cloud" is both a metaphor for those network-distributed computers and a reference to how the data computation process is hidden from view. Servers work according to your needs, carving out the specific "cloud" you require from the vast "cloud." It's truly a very romantic metaphor.
