Nanghan Fortress is located on the south bank of the Han River within Seoul. It was built in 1624 during the Silla period as Korea's highest stone fortress, based on the natural fortifications of the plateau region, to repel external invasions. The fortress sits atop a mountain at an elevation of 495 meters, spans 8 kilometers, and features four gates and six secret gates. A command post for directing soldiers was set up on a high ground inside the fortress.
Today, Nanghan Fortress has been developed into a natural park, welcoming 1.5 million tourists from all over the world each year. It serves not only as an entertainment and leisure space but also as an educational venue for revisiting history. The southern side of the mountain and the Bukak Skyway along the stream in Guangdijuan area are great places for a drive. Additionally, there are many well-known restaurants, bars, and cafes with live concerts nearby, making it an ideal spot for family gatherings and romantic dates. To truly experience the charm of Nanghan Fortress, one must walk around the entire fortress. It is said that completing a full circuit takes about two to three hours, during which you can trace the footsteps of history and feel the deep essence of the mountain fortress. If you climb to the South Gate or the Lianzhu Peakç“®city, you will have a panoramic view of Seoul, and with the gentle breeze blowing, all feelings of distress and oppression will vanish instantly.
