In order to completely annihilate the Shandong Liberation Army, Chiang Kai-shek gathered more than 200,000 troops of Tang Enbo's corps, with Zhang Lingfu's 74th Division as the vanguard, advancing from south to north. He also ordered the Lixianzhou Corps in Jinan to push from north to south to the line of Laiwu and Xintai, attempting to attack our army from both the north and the south. Chen and Zhu decided to leave Shen Zhenxin's unit to intercept on the southern line, while the main force would encircle and annihilate the Lixianzhou unit, thus beginning the famous Laifu Campaign. The 50,000 enemy troops in Laifu attempted to break through towards Tusi port. Shen Zhenxin led his troops to swiftly capture Tusi port, cutting off the enemy's retreat route and completely annihilating the Lixianzhou Corps. Unwilling to accept defeat, the Kuomintang army again attacked our Mengyin County in Shandong with Zhang Lingfu leading the charge, intending to concentrate and annihilate our Huadong Field Army in the Yimeng Mountains. With the courage to take the head of a senior general from an army of millions, Chen and Zhu decided to encircle and annihilate the 74th Division. However, Zhang Lingfu recklessly occupied Mount Menglianggu, intending to use the tactic of central explosion and four walls surrounding to place our army in a desperate situation. For three days and nights, 720,000 troops from both sides fiercely battled in the small area of Mount Menglianggu, resulting in rivers of blood and fields of corpses. Finally, Shen Zhenxin's unit attacked the main peak of Mount Menglianggu from the back mountain path, directly raiding the stone cave command post of Zhang Lingfu. With no way out, Zhang Lingfu committed suicide along with his generals, sacrificing their lives for the cause. This was a classic battle that shook heaven and earth, where the power disparity between the Nationalists and Communists was enormous, yet success and failure were instantly reversed.
