Father Laozhou (played by Stephen Chow), with a low social status, worked as a day laborer at a construction site during the day and picked garbage from the dump at night to make money. In order to let his son Xiaodi Zhou (played by Joey Xu) succeed, he spared no effort to take all his savings to send his son to the best aristocratic school. Because of their poverty, the father and son were discriminated against in various ways by society. Not only was Laozhou bullied by the foreman (played by Stephen Lin), but he was also ridiculed by some workers. Xiaodi was also seen as an outsider at school; his school uniform was washed until it turned white, and his shoes were picked from the garbage pile. However, the gentle Miss Yuan (played by Ruby Lin) brought warmth into Xiaodi's life.
By chance, while rummaging through the garbage, Laozhou found a green small ball with tentacles, and used it to replace the electronic dog "Changjiang No. 1" that Xiaodi wanted, and gave it to Xiaodi. During one confinement, Xiaodi accidentally summoned Chopper, and named him "Changjiang Qi Hao".
