According to a report on July 21 by the American media Examiner website, female US soldiers in Iraq were frequently subjected to sexual assault, with one female soldier even being gang-raped during daylight hours by several Iraqi men. The American media revealed that in 2003, at the age of 47, U.S. Navy female medical officer Diane Pickel Plappert was raped by multiple Iraqi men in a store in the southern Iraqi town of Hillah. She was separated from her team while shopping and dragged to the back of the store by several Iraqi men who proceeded to rape her. Plappert suffered severe psychological trauma; after returning to the United States, her marriage broke down, and she became estranged from her children. Currently, she is undergoing psychological rehabilitation training at the University of Drexel and also regularly attends counseling sessions. Another American female soldier, Carolyn Schapper, was also sexually assaulted while serving in Iraq.
