Last week, Nokia announced at a press conference that both the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1020 would support RAW output, making them the first two phones on Earth to do so. While many were amazed by this announcement, some questioned the quality of Nokia's RAW output. In response, Nokia provided evidence to back up their claims.
In the upcoming firmware update, the Lumia 1020 will gain a 5MP+DNG 38MP option at the bottom of the image quality settings. The RAW files obtained from the Lumia 1020 are in DNG format. We found that DNG files indeed offer good adjustability — desired effects can be achieved through exposure compensation and white balance adjustments.
However, don't expect a fundamental improvement in image quality when posting on social media platforms like Weibo. After all, Nokia's provision of RAW output is merely an opportunity for photography enthusiasts to experiment. Below are screenshots of the details before our adjustments, after converting RAW to JPG:
It can be seen that if the image is zoomed in to 100%, noise and clarity still leave much to be desired. Nevertheless, it must be acknowledged that this remains the best among smartphones. Finally, we have included the official RAW files for those interested to download and experiment with themselves. Regardless, photography enthusiasts will need to consider storage space issues for their Lumia 1520 or Lumia 1020 in the future.
