Facebook Tests Screen Tracking Software

The Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook is testing software capable of tracking users' mouse cursor movements, monitoring how often users view their newsfeeds on mobile devices. The data collected by Facebook, such as the duration of user interaction with content and how long the cursor lingers on a particular section of the page, could be used as leverage to increase advertising prices.

These data can be utilized for everything from product development to more precise targeted advertising. To analyze this additional data, Facebook will employ a custom version of Hadoop. Facebook is not the first company to do this; marketing company Shutterstock also uses the Hadoop Distributed File System to analyze user cursor movement data on its website.
