SA: Huawei surpasses LG in Q3, ranks third in global smartphone shipments

Strategy Analytics' recently published report on global smartphone shipments for Q3 2013 shows that last quarter, global smartphone shipments reached 251 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of 45%. Huawei surpassed LG last quarter to become the third largest in global smartphone shipments.

This aligns with Strategy Analytics' prediction from their Q2 report. Analysts stated that the rapid shipment of the Ascend P6 and the strong sales of mass-market device G610 in the domestic market were the main reasons Huawei overtook LG.

Among other manufacturers, Samsung and Apple continue to occupy the top two spots in global smartphone shipments. Last quarter, Samsung's smartphone shipments accounted for 35.2% of total shipments, increasing by 2.3% year-on-year. Apple shipped a record high of 33.8 million iPhones for the same period historically. However, against the backdrop of collective growth in smartphone shipments, the proportion of iPhone shipments declined, dropping by 2.2% compared to the same period last year.

LG and Lenovo ranked fourth and fifth respectively. LG shipped 12 million smartphones last quarter, accounting for 4.8% of total shipments; Lenovo shipped 10.8 million smartphones last quarter, accounting for 4.3% of total shipments. The complete shipment data for the top five vendors for last quarter and the same period last year are as follows:

Samsung shipped 88.4 million smartphones in Q3, accounting for 35.2% of total shipments; it shipped 56.9 million smartphones during the same period last year, accounting for 32.9% of total shipments.

Apple shipped 33.8 million iPhones in Q3, accounting for 13.4% of total shipments; it shipped 26.9 million iPhones during the same period last year, accounting for 15.6% of total shipments.

Huawei shipped 12.7 million smartphones in Q3, accounting for 5.1% of total shipments; it shipped 7.6 million smartphones during the same period last year, accounting for 4.4% of total shipments.

LG shipped 12 million smartphones in Q3, accounting for 4.8% of total shipments; it shipped 7 million smartphones during the same period last year, accounting for 4.1% of total shipments.

Lenovo shipped 10.8 million smartphones in Q3, accounting for 4.3% of total shipments; it shipped 6.4 million smartphones during the same period last year, accounting for 3.7% of total shipments.
