A mysterious large cruise ship has recently appeared on Treasure Island in San Francisco, topped with a large structural building. This enigmatic structure has sparked numerous speculations, with indications pointing towards it being another extravagant project by Google, known for its crazy and ambitious ventures.
On last Friday, the tech website CNET and KPIX-TV CBS station reported separately that this cruise ship belonged to Google. CNET speculated that the structure might be a floating data center. However, KPIX indicated that they had learned the building was actually "a floating marketing hub" constructed by Google to promote Google Glass. Although Google Glass has not yet been commercially available on a large scale, it is still planned to be publicly released eventually, with an expected price tag of less than $1,500.
However, the construction process does not seem to have gone smoothly. According to KPIX's report, Google did not have the necessary permits to build a floating wearable electronics center. The construction appears to have been put on hold. The director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission pointed out that if Google wants to obtain the permit, it must prove that the building cannot be constructed on land. Fairly speaking, Google's decision to build a floating structure might also be related to the scarcity of land in San Francisco.
