Microsoft's Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets were officially released a few days ago, and Microsoft has now announced the official support cycles for both devices. According to the official announcement, Microsoft will officially cease support for the Surface 2 series of tablets on April 10, 2018. This is approximately four and a half years from now, which is quite a long time given the current pace of hardware updates and replacements.

Prior to this, Microsoft had hinted that mainstream support for the Surface RT (now simply called Surface) would expire on April 11, 2017, while mainstream support for the first-generation Surface would end on July 10, 2017.

Microsoft has yet to announce the expiration date for mainstream support of the Windows RT operating system. A number of devices running this system were launched in 2012 but have since been discontinued. Currently, only the Surface 2 and Lumia 2520 tablets are equipped with the Windows RT 8.1 operating system.

In addition, Microsoft's support for Windows 8 will continue until October 18, 2015. Mainstream support for Windows 8.1 will last until January 9, 2018, while extended support will continue until January 10, 2023.
