According to Business Insider, in the financial report released on that day, Microsoft revealed some information about its Surface business. The Surface is Microsoft's first self-owned brand PC hardware, a tablet-laptop hybrid product, aiming to compete with the iPad.
However, according to the data disclosed by Microsoft, the Surface does not pose a significant threat to Apple. Microsoft stated that the revenue from the Surface business in the first fiscal quarter was $400 million. However, the company did not disclose the exact sales volume of the Surface, only mentioning that it doubled compared to the previous quarter. (Based on the $400 million income, the sales volume should not exceed 1 million units.)
In the last fiscal year ended in June, Microsoft's Surface revenue was only $853 million, so the business is growing. Microsoft attributes this growth to better marketing, increased product awareness, better positioning, and price reductions. Although growth is good, compared to the iPad, the Surface's sales are still very small.
In the same quarter, Apple's iPad revenue should have exceeded $6 billion, with sales possibly around 14 million units. Apple will release its quarterly report next Monday, at which time the actual figures can be known. Additionally, Microsoft's total revenue for the quarter reached $18.53 billion, making the Surface's $400 million revenue relatively insignificant.
