Microsoft reports earnings: $18.5 billion in total revenue last quarter

Microsoft has released its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2014. For the quarter ended September 30, 2013, Microsoft reported total revenue of $18.53 billion, gross profit, operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share were $13.42 billion, $6.33 billion, $5.24 billion, and $0.62 per share respectively.

Microsoft noted that these financial results include $113 million in deferred revenue from Windows 8.1 pre-sales.

Below is a detailed look at Microsoft's main sources of revenue:

1. Total revenue from Microsoft Devices and Consumer increased by 4%, reaching $7.46 billion.

— Windows OEM revenue decreased by 7%;

— Surface revenue grew to $400 million;

— Search advertising revenue increased by 47%.

2. Microsoft’s commercial revenue increased by 10%, reaching $11.2 billion.

— SQL Server revenue saw double-digit growth, with SQL Server Premium revenue growing by over 30%;

— Lync, SharePoint, Exchange and other products also experienced double-digit growth;

— Commercial cloud revenue grew by 103%.
