Google Ideas announced yesterday three tools to promote the free expression of speech: the P2P proxy tool uProxy, the Project Shield service which provides website hosting to resist DDoS attacks, and a digital map that visualizes DDoS attacks. Among these, the most interesting for regular users is the P2P proxy tool uProxy. According to Softpedia, its novelty lies in the use of WebRTC data channels. uProxy is a browser extension that can redirect all browser traffic through a third-party computer. Unlike a VPN, it does not rely on dedicated proxy servers but uses peer-to-peer connections. uProxy is implemented based on WebRTC technology, which is currently supported only by Firefox and Chrome. WebRTC was originally designed for creating web audio and video communications, and its data channel design can transmit any type of data, not just audio and video streams, so it can be used for file transfers and text communications. WebRTC technology provides a reliable method for real-time asynchronous data transfer between browsers, so it can also be used to reroute traffic between computers.
