Google Android security chief Adrian Ludwig used statistics to refute the myth that Android is insecure. He pointed out that while the walled garden approach (aka iPhone) can block malicious programs, it ultimately becomes overly complicated.
On the other hand, Android, which is based on an open innovation model, cannot adopt a device-level walled garden locking system. According to data collected from the new Verify Apps feature in Android, among the 1.5 billion apps installed outside of Google Play, there are 1,200 potentially threatening apps per million. However, the number of apps that can successfully bypass Android's multi-layered security defense system and pose a real threat to users is less than 0.001%.
