Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in
After Windows 8 system boots, it will default to the Start Screen. In the Windows 8.1 Preview, Microsoft added a "boot to desktop" option, allowing users to bypass the Metro version of the start screen and directly boot into the traditional desktop.
However, in the near future, the "boot to desktop" option may be phased out. Microsoft is very confident about the start screen and will eventually remove the "boot to desktop" option because users will surely discover the benefits of the start screen and get used to using it.
Microsoft technical evangelist Randy Guthrie wrote on the official MSDN blog that while Windows 8.1 will retain this option, its disappearance is only a matter of time.
"I like the live tiles of those apps. When using my computer, booting to the start screen provides me with a better experience than booting to the desktop, even though I haven't switched to a touchscreen yet."
"I started to think, maybe the Windows UX designers have been right all along, and over time, this option (boot to desktop) will become one of the least-used features in the new system."
Nevertheless, regardless of what happens in the future, at least for now, the "boot to desktop" feature is a necessary function for users.
