Microsoft Surface RT
On the morning of August 10, Beijing time, according to a report by the American tech news website CNET, despite the poor market performance of Windows RT tablets, Microsoft has still pledged its commitment to the development of ARM-based devices.
Microsoft's Surface tablet, launched last year with the Windows RT edition and powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor, was highly anticipated by both Microsoft and NVIDIA. Unfortunately, the Surface RT did not achieve significant success. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang hinted on Thursday that Windows RT tablets are negatively impacting the company’s financial performance. Furthermore, on Friday, it was reported that Asus has decided to stop developing Windows RT tablets.
Despite this, a Microsoft spokesperson told CNET, “Windows will continue to be committed to the ARM platform.” The spokesperson also suggested that Microsoft is working with hardware partners to soon release more ARM-based devices: "We are looking forward to the new generation of ARM-based Windows devices that will be released later this year." Huang stated on Thursday that Nvidia is "going all out to develop the second-generation Surface product."
In March of this year, Microsoft corporate vice president Michael Angiulo detailed in an interview with CNET why the company remains committed to the Windows RT operating system: "We have a lot of work to do and must endure any distractions; we believe that over time, Windows RT will become even stronger."
It is worth noting, however, that within Microsoft, the ARM platform does not necessarily equate to Windows RT. Besides Windows RT tablets, the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system also runs on the ARM architecture. (Xuan Chen)
