iOS 7 Lock Screen

Introduction: Today, Kyle Russell, an author from the American tech blog SAI, wrote an article criticizing twelve design flaws in iOS 7. He emphasized that these flaws are not software bugs but rather unreasonable designs or missing features.

The following is the original text:

  1. Inability to customize the lock screen shortcut for opening the camera app

The shortcut on the lock screen can quickly open the camera, which is a good design, but many people may not use Apple's built-in camera app as their primary way of taking photos. I hope Apple allows users to set this shortcut to open apps like Instagram or Snapchat. Perhaps it’s not enough; why not let it open any app?

  2. Poor placement of the voice dictation button on the keyboard

Placing the voice dictation button next to the most frequently used space bar seems absurd. I don't know how many times I accidentally pressed this button and had to wait a second to cancel.

  3. Poor signal reception in big cities

I spend most of my time using my iPhone in San Francisco and New York City, both known for poor signals. Although there isn't much that software can do to improve this, I hope the new generation of iPhones doesn’t lose signal so easily.

  4. Ugly new icons

Icons for Safari, Photos, and Game Center are especially ugly.

  5. Siri falls far short compared to Google Now

Although Siri is good, and the notification center in iOS 7 is better than previous versions, after using the Google Now feature built into the Android and iOS versions of Google Search, Siri feels incredibly weak by comparison.

  6. Unable to change the default email app

iOS's Mail app has the same problem. It's decent, but my preferred email app is Mailbox.

When I want to send a group of photos to someone (for example, family members who aren’t very tech-savvy and haven’t joined my social network), I wish I could directly choose what email app to use within the Photos app.

  7. Poor autocorrect functionality and inability to use alternative keyboards

Apple's autocorrect function is notoriously bad. Why can't Apple allow users to use other keyboards like Android does? I want a Swype-like keyboard on my iPhone.

  8. Lack of widgets

Unlike Android, iOS still does not support customizable shortcuts or widgets. I hope some power-saving features from OS X Mavericks could be moved to iOS 7.

  9. Battery life needs improvement

This is probably the most complained-about issue by smartphone users. Smartphones are powerful, but their batteries always run out before the day ends. If Apple's next generation of iPhones can ensure the battery lasts all day, I would buy it immediately.

  10. Unable to select a default browser

I use Google Chrome on both my desktop and iPhone, but the experience isn’t complete because Apple doesn't allow Chrome to be set as the default browser. Therefore, if I click on links in emails, tweets, or apps, they will automatically open in Safari instead of Chrome.

This means that to open a link in Chrome from an email and bookmark it, I have to click at least three more times. If you spend as much time online as I do, that adds up to a lot of extra clicks.

  11. Unable to leave group message conversations

If someone adds me to a group message conversation, I cannot choose to leave, and I keep receiving group messages until everyone stops. Although being able to block numbers in iOS 7 is a huge improvement, I still want to avoid being flooded with unwanted group messages.

  12. Backup process needs improvement

Wireless backup is a great new feature, but it takes too long to back up to iCloud. Why can't I specify what content I need to back up? I've seen many people experience corrupted backups, forcing them to start over entirely when restoring. (Daxi)
