According to USA Today, insiders have revealed that Andy Rubin, the former Google executive and "Father of Android," is currently working on a robotics project at the Google X laboratory.

Speculations about Rubin's next move after stepping down as head of Android in March this year have been rife among industry insiders. Insiders now say that Rubin is indeed working at Google X. This revelation isn't entirely surprising since Google CEO Larry Page had mentioned in an official blog post when Rubin stepped down: "Andy, take on more moonshot projects!"

The term "moonshot projects" clearly refers to the Google X laboratory. However, what exactly Rubin was working on at Google X has remained a mystery until now. According to insiders, Rubin is currently dedicated to a robotics project.

The self-driving car and many other futuristic projects were born out of Google X. The company has gathered a group of talented individuals through this lab, led by Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Jeff Huber, a long-time veteran who previously led Google Maps and commerce businesses, also joined this department in March.

"The best talents usually place the biggest bets; they face little competition because others are not crazy enough to try." Page said in April following Rubin's position adjustment.

Google hopes to change the world with so-called "moonshot projects" like self-driving cars. Page stated during Google's first-quarter earnings call that he will continue to allocate talent to major projects beyond search.

"This is similar to Android, which is why we invest in seemingly risky projects like self-driving cars today," Page said at the time.

Prior to founding Android, Rubin co-founded Danger, which became the foundation for the popular Sidekick phone and was later sold to Microsoft. He also worked at Apple for many years. In March this year, the position of Android chief was taken over by Sundar Pichai, head of the Chrome department.

A Google spokesperson said: "We do not comment on rumors or speculations."
