If Edge fails, Ubuntu for Android will die an early death

The Canonical Foundation has recently described many beautiful visions of Ubuntu for Android and is raising funds for the Ubuntu Edge super smartphone (which supports both Ubuntu and Android).

Ubuntu for Android is a piece of software that allows your Android phone to transform into a PC when connected to an external display. This is actually one of Canonical's older projects; they had this idea long before the Ubuntu Edge, even before Ubuntu Touch. But up until now, we've only seen the tip of the iceberg of Ubuntu for Android, with most developments still coming from the Ubuntu Edge project.

A user asked if Ubuntu for Android would still be released if the Ubuntu Edge project failed. Canonical engineer Alex Chiang gave a straightforward answer: "I really don't know; we're still discussing this internally."

This response indirectly suggests that within Canonical, there isn't a mature development or release plan for Ubuntu for Android. Industry analysts believe that if the trailblazing Ubuntu Edge fails to succeed, it’s likely that the subsequent Ubuntu for Android software may never see the light of day.
