The company's first quarterly profit has given Tesla the confidence to try more car models. According to insiders from The Verge, a new model is expected to be launched in the early part of next year and will initially offer an ultra-luxury series. The performance of the new car is comparable to the P85 series, capable of accelerating quickly to 60 mph within 4.2 seconds. Of course, the performance might be even better.
Currently, the S series only supports rear-wheel drive, a configuration that driving enthusiasts love, but its performance can be significantly affected by bad weather. Using all-wheel drive allows Tesla to introduce more models into various regions without worrying about the impact of harsh weather on vehicle performance. At the shareholders' meeting in June, Elon Musk pointed out that the all-wheel-drive chassis would go into production between 2014-2015. Although he was referring to the X series at the time, it wouldn't be surprising for other models to adopt a similar chassis design. Nowadays, many sports cars are transitioning to four-wheel drive to gain more power.
Unfortunately, the S series cannot help Musk achieve his dream of a $30,000 electric car. Although it can be guessed that the cutting-edge technology of the X series and S series will gradually permeate into other models, those looking for more affordable options may still have to wait some time.
