In the latest quarter, Apple's content store performed exceptionally well. Revenue of $4 billion in the quarter was the second highest in history, with a slight decline compared to the previous quarter which had revenues of $4.1 billion. The content store orders (a rough estimate of content revenue) reached $4.3 billion. iTunes quarterly revenue was $2.4 billion, an increase of 29%, and Apple stated that "content and apps grew strongly." Apple TV added support for HBO GO and WatchESPN, increasing its library by over 60,000 movies and over 230,000 TV episodes. To date, users have downloaded over 1 billion TV episodes and over 390 million movies via iTunes, purchasing more than 800,000 episodes and over 350,000 movies daily. The App Store now offers over 900,000 apps, with 375,000 specifically developed for iPad. Cumulative app downloads have exceeded 50 billion. Developers are earning at a rate of $1 billion per quarter through the App Store. Developer income exceeded $1.1 billion this quarter, representing half of the total income from the past four quarters. iCloud has over 320 million users and Game Center accounts exceed 240 million. Users have sent nearly 900 billion iMessages. Users have uploaded over 125 billion photos and received over 8 trillion notifications.
Some observations and estimates by the renowned analyst Horace Dediu: Music revenue growth remains roughly around 15%, while video revenue growth stays approximately at 25%. Apps continue to grow rapidly at nearly double the speed. Price contraction will lead to a decrease in book revenue. Software growth stabilizes at about 15%. Apple's own apps are nearing saturation due to the relatively stable number of iOS users and Mac sales.
