Canalys today released a report showing that in the second quarter, Samsung and Apple saw double-digit growth in their smartphone shipments. However, they lost market share to Chinese manufacturers including Lenovo, Coolpad, Huawei, ZTE, and Xiaomi, which collectively accounted for over 20% of the global smartphone market share, up from 15% a year ago.
In the report, analyst Nicole Peng noted: "China Mobile's strategy to promote TD-SCDMA development has been extremely beneficial to local manufacturers, especially Lenovo and Coolpad. The key task for these manufacturers is to reduce their reliance on domestic markets and seek growth in international markets."
Samsung remains the largest smartphone manufacturer, with Apple in second place. Lenovo holds third place with an 11% market share, closely followed by Coolpad with slightly less than 11%. South Korea's LG Electronics ranks fifth with a 10.7% share.
Canalys stated that 95% of Lenovo's smartphone shipments are destined for China. In the second quarter, Lenovo's smartphone shipments grew by 131% year-over-year, while Coolpad experienced even more remarkable growth, doubling its shipments year-over-year.

The United States shipped 32.9 million smartphones in the second quarter, growing by 36% year-over-year. Nokia's Windows Phone (WP) shipments grew by 31% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter, increasing WP's market share to 3%. BlackBerry's shipments grew by 15% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter, maintaining a 3% market share.
