The market research firm GlobalWebIndex recently released the Q2 2013 mobile app rankings, with Google Maps unsurprisingly retaining its top position, while WeChat had to settle for fifth place.
The top ten apps in order are Google Maps, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, WeChat, Twitter, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, and Instagram, among which only WeChat is a domestic Chinese application.
When compiling the statistics, GlobalWebIndex considered smartphone users who had used the apps in the past month. According to the data, 54% of users had used Google Maps (possibly related to Google services?), and 27% had used WeChat. It's worth noting that the vast majority of WeChat users are located within China, indicating from the proportions that the number of domestic smartphone users is quite large, likely accounting for around 20% of the global total without much difficulty.
