Spanish mobile phone manufacturer Geeksphone is now selling a smartphone named Peak+ that runs on the Firefox OS system. Priced at 149 euros (approximately 1209 yuan), it has started taking pre-orders today. Previously, Geeksphone launched a Peak phone mainly aimed at developers, while this Peak+ is officially released for consumer users.
Geeksphone stated that compared to the Peak, the Peak+ now uses 1GB of RAM and has been redesigned in various aspects, offering an overall better feel. They also mentioned that starting from September 15th, the price of this phone will change, but did not mention the exact shipping time.
The Peak+ is equipped with the latest version of Firefox OS 1.1. The new version of the system has improved power management and graphics processing performance, thus providing better battery life for the device. Other configurations are the same as the previous Peak: a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8225 processor, a 960x540 IPS screen, an 8-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, supports microSD card expansion, supports tri-band UMTS and HSPA networks, and has a 1800mAh battery.
In fact, Geeksphone was one of the first manufacturers to launch devices running on the Firefox OS system. After entering the consumer market, it will face more challenges from competitors. Just within the Firefox OS camp, there are currently ZTE Open being sold by Deutsche Telekom in Poland, and Alcatel One Touch Fire being sold by Telefonica in Spain. Of course, in the low-end market, Geeksphone still needs to compete fiercely with Android.
