Mobile development backend service provider Parse has announced on its official blog that it will be acquired by Facebook, with the deal expected to close in the near future. According to TechCrunch, the acquisition price is approximately $80 million. Previously, Parse had only raised a total of $7 million in funding. After the acquisition, Parse will continue to provide services for developers. This allows Facebook to add another revenue-generating business beyond its advertising network: B2D (Business-to-Developers).Parse offers backend services for developing mobile applications, including data storage, message push notifications, and user management, among others. This allows developers to focus on client-side development without worrying too much about server-side issues. It already provides services for 60,000 applications, somewhat like a mobile version of Heroku. Parse adopts a freemium model; for example, push notifications exceeding a certain quantity threshold will incur charges.Facebook does not develop its own operating system or produce its own devices, but Facebook has become the social middleware for many mobile applications, and Facebook itself is also an advertising network. Now, by integrating Parse, Facebook can grow into the role of a backend service provider for developers.
