A hallmark result of the telecom restructuring is that it will bring China's mobile communications into the "3G" era. Facing the relatively mature CDMA2000 and WCDMA, will China's 3G standard - TD-SCDMA - be able to occupy a favorable position in future market competition? Currently, no decision has been made on what 3G standards the three licenses will choose or their specific allocation plans, but with the finalization of the telecom restructuring, based on the basic network facilities owned by existing operators, it seems there isn't much suspense over the fact that New China Mobile, New China Telecom, and New China Unicom will respectively obtain 3G licenses for TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000, and WCDMA. This also means that, for China's 600 million mobile phone users, having three different 3G network standards will provide more choices.
