The term "X86" refers to a set of machine instructions supported by processors from Intel and several other companies, which roughly defines the usage specifications of the chip. From the 8086 through the 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486, to the subsequent Pentium series, and now the multi-core technology, all use an evolution of the same x86 instruction set—continuously expanding while remaining backward compatible.
