Child, are you ignorant or heartless?
These days, all of us are immersed in the May 12 earthquake, mourning for those departed compatriots. As a primary school teacher, I feel sorrow for those children who were buried alive in the ruins without even having time to say goodbye. But at the same time, when I think about these present-day children and my own students, I think that this is a good educational opportunity. So, I let them watch TV, read newspapers, and collect some information about the disaster area.
Many children were deeply moved after watching and reading. Some naturally shed tears while watching and reading; others were so moved that their noses turned red from crying. However, in the class I am leading, among 35 boys and 15 girls, very few of these "strong" and hard-hearted boys were moved. I asked them to express their feelings from the bottom of their hearts, either by speaking or writing them down. The results greatly disappointed me. If they couldn't write it, shouldn't they be able to at least speak out their feelings? The "strength" of these children has disappointed me. Is it because the stories inside aren't touching enough, or have they become numb to the content within?
