According to the report from our newspaper (by reporter Wang Qiong), at around 5 o'clock this morning, a fire suddenly broke out in a resident's home in Building No.46 of Zhonghua Road in Xicheng District. A man tried to escape by tying bed sheets around his waist and climbing down, but unfortunately fell to his death. However, his wife and daughter were safely rescued.
"Help! Help!" Nearby residents said that when the incident happened, it was still dark. Suddenly, cries for help came from the burning apartment, accompanied by thick smoke. Neighbors immediately called the police, followed by more than ten fire trucks arriving on the scene. The fire occurred in a three-bedroom apartment rented by a family from Anhui Province who were doing business in Beijing. The wife and younger daughter were trapped on the balcony, continuously shouting for help.
"There is too much smoke!" After the incident, the landlord also rushed to the scene. According to her description, she and another neighbor rushed to the 17th floor. That male neighbor even helped her kick open the door. They found that the cause of the fire was an electric bicycle placed in the living room, with the entire room filled with dense smoke.
As firefighters were putting all their efforts into extinguishing the fire, suddenly there was a "bang", as one of the trapped men had fallen from the building. The 120 emergency personnel discovered that the man had fallen onto a cement platform on the first floor and died on the spot. "His waist was still tied with bed sheets. He must have wanted to save himself, so he tied the bed sheets together. But while climbing down along the bed sheets, they suddenly broke," a police officer at the scene speculated.
The landlord mentioned that the deceased man was 43 years old, with a son and a daughter. His younger daughter was only two years old this year. After being rescued, the man's wife and child went downstairs. The little girl initially did not realize what had happened to her father and was still playing on the ground. According to Mr. Yang, a witness, after the incident, the man's wife hugged her child and stood next to her husband crying for a long time until the body was taken away.
At around 7:30 in the morning, a fire investigation vehicle was still parked on the west side of the residential building where the incident occurred. Firefighters were still investigating the cause of the fire at the scene.
