Xinhua News Agency, Nanchang, January 15 (reported by Wu Qiang) - In response to the "infant suspected death from consuming St. Henry's milk powder" incident, the Duchang County People's Government of Jiangxi Province issued a statement indicating that according to investigations, the male infant died due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and multiple organ failure. Tests conducted on the involved milk powder showed a 100% pass rate.
On January 10, the Duchang County Administration for Industry and Commerce in Jiangxi Province received reports from residents stating that one of the twins born to Mr. Jiang from Miaoshang Village, Xiyuan Township, had died while the other was sick, suspected to be related to consuming a certain brand of milk powder. The local government immediately activated an emergency plan and organized relevant departments to go to the scene for investigation.
According to the investigation, around 10:00 AM on January 7, 2012, the male infant exhibited symptoms such as convulsions and diarrhea, and was taken to the county Maternal and Child Health Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Jiujiang City Maternal and Child Health Hospital for emergency care. At 22:30 that day, the male infant passed away due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and multiple organ failure. On the morning of the 8th, the female infant also showed similar symptoms but with a milder condition, and was discharged after treatment on the morning of the 12th.
The parents reported that both infants had been consuming a certain brand of milk powder without any abnormal situations. Recently, they had consumed the brand's batch number 2011111B11 milk powder, purchased from a supermarket in Zhouxi New Town, Duchang County.
After receiving the report, the Duchang Administration for Industry and Commerce and health departments immediately verified the product delivery notes and sealed the milk powder batches. On January 10, the Administration for Industry and Commerce sent four unopened cans of St. Henry's milk powder purchased by Mr. Jiang and four cans of the same batch from the supermarket to the Jiangxi Dairy Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Station for testing. On January 13, the Jiangxi Dairy Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Station issued a test report showing a 100% pass rate for the relevant tests conducted on five cans of milk powder from this batch.
