In February 2012, the overall level of consumer prices for urban residents nationwide increased by 3.2% year-on-year. Specifically, prices rose by 3.2% in cities and by 3.2% in rural areas; food prices increased by 6.2%, while non-food prices rose by 1.7%; consumer goods prices went up by 3.9%, and service project prices increased by 1.5%. On average from January to February, the overall level of consumer prices for urban residents nationwide increased by 3.9% compared to the same period last year.
In February, the overall level of consumer prices for urban residents nationwide decreased by 0.1% month-on-month. Specifically, prices fell by 0.1% in cities and by 0.1% in rural areas; food prices dropped by 0.3%, while non-food prices remained unchanged; consumer goods prices declined by 0.1%, and service project prices decreased by 0.2%.
I. Year-on-year changes in prices of various commodities
In February, food prices increased by 6.2% year-on-year, contributing approximately 1.99 percentage points to the year-on-year increase in the overall level of consumer prices. Specifically, grain prices rose by 5.4%, contributing about 0.15 percentage points to the increase in the overall level of consumer prices; meat, poultry, and their products increased by 12.9%, contributing around 0.90 percentage points (pork prices increased by 15.9%, contributing about 0.50 percentage points); fresh vegetable prices rose by 6.5%, contributing around 0.21 percentage points; aquatic product prices increased by 7.5%, contributing about 0.18 percentage points; edible oil prices rose by 5.6%, contributing about 0.07 percentage points; fresh fruit prices dropped by 6.1%, reducing the overall level of consumer prices by about 0.14 percentage points; egg prices fell by 10.6%, reducing the overall level of consumer prices by about 0.09 percentage points.
Tobacco, alcohol, and related products prices increased by 3.7% year-on-year. Specifically, alcohol prices rose by 8.7%, and tobacco prices increased by 0.4%.
Clothing prices increased by 3.8% year-on-year. Specifically, garment prices rose by 3.9%, and footwear prices increased by 3.5%.
Household appliances, supplies, and repair services prices increased by 2.5% year-on-year. Specifically, household services and processing-repair services prices rose by 9.4%, and durable consumer goods prices increased by 0.8%.
Healthcare and personal care products prices increased by 2.7% year-on-year. Specifically, Chinese herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine prices rose by 9.1%, medical devices and supplies prices increased by 3.9%, healthcare services prices rose by 0.6%, and Western medicine prices fell by 0.3%.
Transportation and communication prices increased by 0.1% year-on-year. Specifically, vehicle fuel and spare parts prices rose by 6.9%, vehicle use and maintenance prices increased by 3.9%, urban public transportation fees rose by 1.6%, intercity transportation fees increased by 0.6%, communication device prices fell by 13.5%, and transportation means prices decreased by 0.4%.
Recreation, education, cultural products, and services prices fell by 0.4% year-on-year. Specifically, entertainment durable consumer goods and services prices dropped by 6.0%, tourism prices fell by 2.5%, recreation fee prices rose by 1.6%, and education prices increased by 1.3%.
Housing prices increased by 2.1% year-on-year. Specifically, housing rental prices rose by 2.5%, construction materials and decoration materials prices increased by 2.3%, and water, electricity, and fuel prices rose by 1.7%.
According to calculations, among the 3.2% year-on-year increase in the overall level of consumer prices in February, the carry-over effect of price increases from last year accounted for approximately 1.7 percentage points, while new price increases accounted for about 1.5 percentage points.
II. Month-on-month changes in prices of various commodities
In February, food prices fell by 0.3% month-on-month, contributing approximately 0.11 percentage points to the month-on-month decrease in the overall level of consumer prices. Specifically, meat, poultry, and their products prices fell by 1.4%, contributing about 0.10 percentage points to the month-on-month decrease (pork prices fell by 2.6%, contributing about 0.09 percentage points); egg prices dropped by 8.1%, contributing about 0.07 percentage points to the month-on-month decrease; fresh vegetable and fresh fruit prices fell by 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively, contributing a combined total of about 0.01 percentage points to the month-on-month decrease; grain prices rose by 0.2%, contributing about 0.01 percentage points to the month-on-month increase.
In February, non-food prices remained unchanged from the previous month. Specifically, housing prices increased by 0.4%, contributing about 0.08 percentage points to the month-on-month increase. Tobacco, alcohol, and related products, household appliances, supplies, and repair services, healthcare and personal care products, transportation and communication prices increased by 0.2%, 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.1%, respectively; clothing and recreation, education, cultural products, and services prices decreased by 0.3% and 0.8%, respectively. In February, tourism prices fell by 6.2%, contributing about 0.11 percentage points to the month-on-month decrease.
