According to reports, recently I learned from the Yunnan Provincial Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau that the Yunnan Flower Standardization Technology Committee was recently granted a license to be established.
At the auction site, some onlookers believed that most of the camellias up for auction were priced higher than the actual market price. The "Hate Tian Gao" being auctioned was priced at 500,000 yuan, leading to suspicions of speculation. Mr. Zhang, the CEO of a camellia company in Kunming, told reporters: Although this pot of "Hate Tian Gao" has an elegant plant shape, is of excellent variety, and is not commonly seen in the market, its price has deviated from its actual value. Therefore, it was inevitable that no one bid on it. "In my judgment, the market price of this "Hate Tian Gao" is around 50,000 yuan," said Mr. Zhang.
At the public auction held recently during the China Chu Xiong 2012 International Camellia Conference and the Eighth Chinese Camellia Exposition, the prized Yunnan mountain camellia bonsai "Hate Tian Gao", which experts evaluated at 500,000 yuan, failed to sell due to the high price. Most of the other camellias also failed to transact because no one responded to the bids.
It is understood that to better promote standardization work, Yunnan Province has currently formed 12 provincial standardization professional technical committees, including the Yunnan Forestry Standardization Technology Committee. The Yunnan Flower Standardization Technology Committee is responsible for conducting work under the auspices of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Flower Research Institute.
The 10 pots of camellias involved in this auction were all award-winning entries in this camellia conference. Among them, the most fiercely contested camellia was "Zi Dai" provided by the Beautiful Camellia Premium Garden, which won the "Camellia New Variety Award" at this camellia conference. This camellia started at 2,600 yuan and was eventually sold for 4,600 yuan.
"The formation of the Yunnan Flower Standardization Technology Committee is an important sign of accelerating the transformation of Yunnan's flower industry from a quantity-expansion type to a quality-efficiency type," said Wang Zhun, deputy director of the Standardization Division of the Provincial Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. The establishment of the Yunnan Flower Standardization Technology Committee will play a positive role in optimizing industrial structure, improving product quality, standardizing market behavior, and promoting foreign trade. It has important practical significance for driving the continuous, rapid, and healthy coordinated development of the entire province's flower industry.
It is understood that all the camellias participating in this auction were award-winning flowers at the 2012 International Camellia Conference and the Eighth Chinese Camellia Exposition. Among them, the "Hate Tian Gao" cultivated in a hexagonal purple sand container is a fan-shaped bonsai tree about 80 centimeters high with a crown span of about 70 centimeters. It was cultivated by Tang Zai Kun, a flower farmer from Pijia Ying, Dianyuan Town, Panlong District, Kunming, who grafted the valuable Yunnan camellia "Hate Tian Gao" onto an ancient white-flowered tea tree trunk after nearly five years of cultivation. Tang Zai Kun quoted a price of 300,000 yuan, but experts believed that this pot of "Hate Tian Gao" was unique worldwide and had good shaping and maintenance, so they rated its price at 500,000 yuan. However, in the public auction, it failed to sell due to the high price.

In 2011, Yunnan’s flower planting area and total output value reached 700,300 mu and 26.681 billion yuan respectively. The total production of fresh cut flowers and the total export value of flowers reached 6.503 billion stems and 171 million US dollars respectively, increasing by 7.49% and 13.39% year-on-year respectively. For 18 consecutive years, it has maintained the top position nationwide. However, due to its late start and low starting point, the province's flower industry still faces many urgent problems to be solved, such as unreasonable industrial structure, backward production technology, poor product quality, and lack of market competitiveness for enterprises and products.
Xiao Yongxian, the head of Xiao Family Garden in Tengchong County, participated in the auction of three pots of camellias among the ten pots in this auction. One pot of "Hate Tian Gao" with a stem diameter of about 4 centimeters was priced at 15,000 yuan, but it failed to transact as the highest bidder only offered 8,000 yuan; another pot of "Mei Nu He Shou" camellia bonsai, which won the Camellia Tree Bonsai Award, was also priced at 48,000 yuan and similarly failed to transact due to lack of bidders. "Although none of the three pots of camellias we participated in the auction were successfully traded, we benefited greatly and learned a lot of advanced camellia breeding techniques. We will take these techniques back home and let our camellias develop better," said Xiao Yongxian.
