Forbes magazine released its ranking of the world's billionaires on Wednesday, with Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim again taking the top spot with an estimated net worth of $69 billion, ahead of Bill Gates' $61 billion and [Oracle of Omaha] Warren Buffett's $44 billion.
Slim, 72 years old, has ranked first in Forbes magazine's list of global billionaires for three consecutive years. His wealth mainly comes from the assets of his telecommunications [empire].
In this year's Forbes list, the United States has a clear lead with 425 billionaires on the list; Russia follows closely behind with 96 billionaires. By global city, Moscow tops the list with 78 billionaires; New York City is second with 58 people; London is third with 39 people.
This year's Forbes list includes a record high of 1,226 individuals, with these billionaires having an average net worth of $3.7 billion.
Most of Slim's wealth comes from his telecommunications giant, which has also expanded into retail, finance, commodities, and energy among other fields. Since the beginning of this year, Slim has acquired more assets overseas and currently holds partial shares in department store operator Saks, The New York Times Company, and asset management company BlackRock. In June last year, Slim sold his stake in oil services company Bronco Drilling, making a considerable profit.
