Juventus 220 times, AC Milan 162 times, Bari 155 times, Inter Milan 151 times, Catania 146 times, Fiorentina 133 times, Lecce 116 times, Bologna 112 times, Genoa 107 times, Udinese 100 times, Brescia 98 times, Roma 96 times, Parma 95 times, Sampdoria 91 times, Lazio 87 times, Palermo 86 times, Chievo 71 times, Cagliari 62 times, Cesena 59 times, and Napoli 51 times.
Although both Moratti and Leonardo described Inter Milan's season as "positive", the decline from a treble winner to possibly only winning the Italian Cup cannot be considered small, clearly indicating that this was not a successful season. The reason most frequently cited is injuries, with Leonardo also emphasizing on multiple occasions that excessive player losses significantly impacted Inter Milan. However, through statistical analysis, Slow Lens discovered that Inter Milan was not the "most affected" team this season; in fact, in terms of injury statistics, Inter Milan could only rank fourth, while league champions AC Milan ranked second, suffering even more severe losses than Inter Milan.
The data compiled by Slow Lens is up to the 37th round, showing the total number of times each Serie A team missed matches due to injuries. Juventus is undoubtedly the top team in terms of injuries, with a total of 220 missed appearances due to injuries, averaging nearly six players unable to participate per round. Ranking second is AC Milan, the new Serie A champion, with 162 missed appearances due to injuries, averaging over four absent players per round. Bari ranks third with 155 missed appearances due to injuries, while Inter Milan's 151 missed appearances places them fourth on this list.
Of course, injuries are a common issue faced by all Serie A teams this season. With the season not yet finished, there have already been 2,198 missed appearances due to injuries in Serie A, averaging nearly 60 injured players per round, prompting one to reflect on the severity of injuries. Napoli had the fewest injuries this season, which is a key reason they were able to finish in the top three and secure a spot in next season's Champions League.
Attached below is the Slow Lens statistical summary of the number of injuries for Serie A teams:
On the other hand, simple numbers cannot fully represent the loss caused by missing players, as this is related to the importance of the injured players and whether the absences are concentrated in certain positions. For example, the absence of Nesta versus Bonera would have vastly different impacts on AC Milan. Additionally, if injuries are concentrated in a specific position rather than spread across the three lines, it causes greater harm to a team. The majority of Inter Milan's absences this season involved key players such as Sneijder, Milito, and Samuel, and there were often situations where absences were concentrated in a specific position (such as midfield or center-back), leaving the coach almost without options in some matches. Therefore, Inter Milan was still greatly affected by injuries.
This clearly does not align with public perception. It has long been acknowledged that Inter Milan's poor performance this season was due to injuries, so why did they not rank in the top three on the injury list? This makes sense. First, Inter Milan's injuries were mainly concentrated in the first half of the season. In the first half of this season, Il Corriere dello Sport had already conducted a statistical analysis of injuries, at which point Inter Milan's number of injured players had reached 122, far higher than AC Milan's 95 and even surpassing Juventus' 102. In fact, in the first 80 days of the season, Inter Milan already had 38 injured players, averaging over 15 injuries per month, a terrifying level unmatched by any other team. However, in the second half of the season, Inter Milan's injury situation significantly improved. Apart from Samuel, who remained unable to play, most other players returned to the field. Additionally, stars like Sneijder and Ranocchia continued to play despite being injured, thus drastically reducing the number of absent players, ultimately allowing them to be surpassed on this list by Juventus, AC Milan, and Bari.
