One of the more confusing aspects about purchasing an off-brand Android device is figuring out if it has full access to Google-sanctioned software – a built-in Gmail app, Android Market, YouTube player, etc. The 7-inch CherryPad America (what a strong, patriotic name!) promises full Android Market access and shows Gmail and YouTube apps higher up in product shots, although the YouTube app is mysteriously labeled as "Gallery." I remember another cheap Android tablet that made cunning promises regarding full Android Market access.
The 7-inch GenTouch Tablet showed up in a Kmart Sunday ad priced at $150 and everyone went nuts trying to get their hands on one. Alas, the company did not have permission to put Android Market on the tablet, and it was summarily blocked by Google.
If we give CherryPal, the company behind CherryPad America, the benefit of the doubt and assume it has somehow managed to convince Google to let it install Android Market on a device that is not a smartphone or a Samsung Galaxy Tab – a genuine first because after specs, $188 seems reasonable: 800 MHz Samsung CPU with OpenGL 2.0 graphics, Android 2.1 with an upgrade to 2.2 by year's end, 7-inch 800 x 480 screen, 256 MB RAM, 2 GB internal memory with microSD expansion, and built-in Wi-Fi.
The touchscreen is resistive, which means it will take a more deliberate finger press than the capacitive screens we're used to from the current generation of smartphones. It’s not multitouch either.
The company’s press release insists that “The CherryPad is neither an iPad killer nor an iPad-clone,” pointing out that the full press release after the jump reads, “It’s also less than half the price of the iPad.” : 1 2 Related Topics Articles:
