American forward Herculez Gomez scored his second goal of the Mexican Primera Division season Saturday night as Santos Laguna snapped a three-game winless streak in a 5-2 defeat of San Luis. Gomez earned his first start since transferring to Santos over the winter and made the most of his opportunity, breaking a 2-2 deadlock in the 54th minute. Gomez slid to meet a cross at the far post and knocked his shot home from a tight angle. Herculez Gomez is a U.S. national who now plays for Santos Laguna in Mexico. U.S. fans will remember Peralta for his goal for Mexico during Jurgen Klinsmann's debut as U.S. coach, a 1-1 tie last August. Gomez scored his first of the season last weekend but left the field with a bitter taste after missing a late penalty kick that would have lifted Santos to a draw with Chivas de Guadalajara. The Las Vegas product and 2010 World Cup veteran will feel better after rebounding with a start, a goal and a win at the Estadio Corona on Saturday. Santos climbed to 5-2-2 with the victory. Next up for Gomez and Santos—MLS opposition. They’ll visit the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.
