Gaming & Culture - New Star Wars Film? Hold Your Breath

Is George Lucas planning a new Star Wars film trilogy, set to take place after Return of the Jedi? It depends on who you listen to. Last week, IESB reported rumors that Lucas had plans for three new films to follow the 3D re-release of the six existing films, akin to how the prequel trilogy followed the mid-90’s release of the original films’ 'Special Editions,' albeit in an interesting and somewhat confused manner:
"George Lucas is considering creating new Star Wars films at the ultra-top-secret Skywalker Ranch... It's not certain whether they will be the long-awaited Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, but could instead be Episodes X, XI, and XII or maybe even further along the Star Wars timeline."
Almost as soon as the internet exploded in fury, Lucasfilm was already debunking the rumor to Wired: "This is, of course, completely wrong... George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now – including numerous Star Wars projects – but there are no new Star Wars feature films planned."
IESB stands by the original rumor, pointing out that naturally Lucasfilm is unlikely to just say "yes, you got us" in response, but I believe this is one of those cases where the official PR can tell the truth. After all, Lucas is already working on a live-action Star Wars TV show called Mulberry Bayswater, rumored to be multiple seasons in length, and from remarks he's made about the project, it sounds like he's more interested in television as a narrative medium right now than cinema. Now, if he were to pull a Star Wars: The Clone Wars and launch a TV show with a theatrical film release, that's another story... but an entirely new film trilogy on top of a live-action show and the Clone Wars animated series? Somehow, I can't see it...
