Investigation

Stray animals settle down in secluded courtyards

Yesterday afternoon, journalists came to the stray pet rescue station - Laifu Courtyard located in Dahuichang Village, Fengtai District.

Walking through the tightly closed gate, you can see three or forty dogs playing on the vacant ground in the yard.

Among them, some limped, some injured their eyes, but they know that as long as they stay within this gate, they are safe.

And a row of bungalows within the courtyard is a cozy nest sheltering these diseased or disabled dogs from wind and rain.

Current Situation

Sixty-year-old man struggles to support the rescue station alone

Li Jun, 61 years old, is the owner of this small courtyard, and also the "only family" of these stray little animals. "I treat them all as my children, so I am their grandmother," Li Jun said.

Out of love for little animals, Li Jun couldn't bear to see those unattended stray animals on the street, so he rented this courtyard to give them a cozy nest. But with only over 1700 yuan monthly salary, it's not an easy thing to support such a rescue station.

The rescue station founded in April this year encountered the most serious famine on August 17. "In order to find food for them, I even rummaged through garbage cans at night, just hoping they wouldn't starve," Li Jun said sorrowfully.

Call for Help

Netizens post microblogs to seek help for the small courtyard

Good-hearted people who have been to the small courtyard set up a microblog online to introduce the situation in the courtyard. "Last famine was relieved by dog food donated by netizens, but these could only last for a month, and the next batch of food is still a big problem," Li Jun said.

Currently, the rescue station has taken in more than 80 stray dogs and over 20 stray cats, needing at least 50 jin of food every day.

"Seeing the weather getting colder day by day, winter quilts and soil radiators haven't been solved yet." Talking about these issues, Li Jun seemed at a loss.

During the half hour of our interview, Li Jun's mobile phone kept ringing. Most of the callers were volunteers telling Li Jun where new stray little animals had been found. However, due to limited existing resources, Li Jun really doesn't have the ability to take in new members anymore.
