Yesterday, the 2012 Red Bull "Ruling the Badminton Court" city badminton competition was launched in Beijing. This purely amateur badminton competition, which follows a mixed team format of four men and one woman, has been officially approved by the National Table Tennis and Badminton Sports Management Center. It has already been successfully held twice since 2010, and this year's final will take place on August 6th in London, with the Chinese Badminton Team attending to support.
Total coach of the Chinese Badminton Team, Li Yongbo, even envisioned yesterday that amateur players could enter the previously professional Badminton Super League.
This competition, known as "[4+1]" and the "Mini Sudirman Cup," will hold its final in London during the Olympic Games period this year. The date is set for August 6th, right after the conclusion of the Olympic badminton events, making it highly attractive. This led Coach Li Yongbo, who attended the event yesterday, to envision the possibility of incorporating amateur competitions into the Badminton Super League in the future. "If amateur badminton can develop well under the impetus of Red Bull Ruling the Badminton Court, then professionalism and amateurism can be combined in the Badminton Super League," said Coach Li. "For example, Wang Yihan's Shanghai club could have the first four matches contested by professional players, while the last match is contested by amateur badminton champions from the cities where the two clubs are located, with scores counted together. As long as the audience and media enjoy watching such matches, I would personally be very willing."
The National Table Tennis and Badminton Sports Management Center currently also hosts the "East-West-North-South-Center" national amateur badminton competition. If the "Ruling the Badminton Court" becomes increasingly popular, will it affect the "East-West-North-South-Center"? Li Yongbo said: "Not at present! But the 'East-West-North-South-Center' is not irreplaceable. If any amateur competition hosted by the National Table Tennis and Badminton Sports Management Center does not perform well, while 'Ruling the Badminton Court' performs excellently and attracts people, then our competition should learn from them and draw lessons."
