The IELTS exam has been in China for 21 years, and among listening, speaking, reading, and writing, oral expression remains the most challenging aspect for Chinese students. With an average score of 5.25 in IELTS oral exams, we rank at the bottom globally. How to improve English oral proficiency has always been a question hanging on the lips of us Chinese students, especially the upcoming test-takers, known as "roast ducks". Here, I would like to share my summarized IELTS learning experience with everyone.
In my view, although the IELTS exam is divided into four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the reason why IELTS oral is considered a tough nut to crack lies in the fact that oral learning itself already encompasses all aspects of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Below, I will interpret IELTS oral learning from these four aspects:
You can only speak natively if you listen frequently!
From a physiological perspective, we primarily obtain information from the outside world through vision and hearing. Learning English oral skills is a process of information input and output. Among them, information input is the foundation, so let's first talk about English listening practice. [Hangzhou Global雅思 http://www.gdio.net]
My personal experience is to go to bed early and rise early. After waking up, when your brain is still in a blank state, quickly start the information input, practicing listening. At this time, what you hear is remembered firmly and not easily forgotten. To prevent the just-awakened brain from falling back asleep, it is essential to increase external stimulation—running not only benefits health and keeps you spirited throughout the day but also makes learning more efficient.
Regarding listening materials, I have some suggestions for you. Nowadays, there are abundant listening and speaking materials online, but for oral learning, I recommend Friends, So You Think You Can Dance... Students accustomed to VOA or BBC may realize during conversations with foreign friends that the intonation between the two is obviously different. In comparison, the former is closer to the dialogue in foreigners' daily life, while using the intonation of VOA and BBC in conversations with foreigners is akin to a foreigner learning Chinese talking to us as if broadcasting the news—a weird effect.
In our oral club, the foreign teachers are all native-born British and American individuals. What we hear are all authentic dialogues from foreigners' daily lives, which is very practical. More importantly, here you are completely immersed in a language environment, unconsciously cultivating the ability to think in English, something that cannot be achieved in classes taught by Chinese teachers.
