PIERRE, South Dakota (AP) — The South Dakota legislative committee responsible for writing the state budget is preparing to finalize the $4 billion spending plan. The Joint Appropriations Committee met briefly on Wednesday morning and then recessed until later in the day. Senate Appropriations Chairman Corey Brown of Gettysburg stated that the committee won’t know how much can be allocated in the main budget until lawmakers make decisions on several other bills that impact spending. Individual lawmakers have proposed numerous changes to the bill, with many proposals aiming to increase spending on schools and medical services for low-income individuals. However, most of these proposed changes are likely to be rejected. The budget will allocate approximately $4 billion from state, federal, and other funds. The Legislature plans to pass the budget by Friday.
