Recently, a microblog post titled "Ten Standards for New White-Collar Workers in China in 2012" has drawn attention and sparked heated discussions among white-collar workers. Many netizens lamented that they were far from meeting these standards and exclaimed, "I was eliminated from the white-collar worker category just by looking at the first standard." In response, white-collar culture experts said that the discussion about the "new standards" reflected a significant gap between the work-life state of many white-collar workers and reality.

This "Ten Standards for New White-Collar Workers in China in 2012" was compiled by netizens and, although it had no authority, it quickly spread on microblogs. The standards included: a monthly salary of more than 20,000 yuan; commitment to fitness and exercise; at least two-bedroom accommodation; a car worth around 150,000 yuan for commuting; a fixed circle of friends; work not limited to being completed in the office, remote work is a future trend; working from nine to five with enough leisure time; having unique entertainment methods; valuing low-carbon living; having beloved fashion brands.

For these ten standards, many netizens felt that they were far from their own situations (www.sanmuyouxi.com). Netizen "Miao Ke milk" said, "I always thought I was a typical little white-collar worker, but it seems I overestimated myself." Netizen "zhuzhu_J" stated that it would take at least another 20 years of effort to meet the standards. The reporter found that many netizens sighed wistfully at the leisure time and entertainment methods mentioned in the "new standards." "Tina Mi" self-mockingly said, "It takes several hours just to commute to and from work, and the most common form of entertainment is overtime."

Are the netizens' discussions rational? Associate Professor Lai Feng from the College of Humanities and Communication at Shanghai Normal University believed that these ten standards did not conform to the actual situation of white-collar workers in our country, but also reflected the gap between the ideal life of white-collar workers and their current conditions. In the "Research Report on the Cultural Needs of Shanghai's White-Collar Workers" completed last year by his research team, the monthly income standard for white-collar workers was set at 2,000 to 20,000 yuan, while those exceeding 20,000 yuan were classified as gold-collar workers. For white-collar workers, setting a monthly salary of more than 20,000 yuan would definitely cause them some unnecessary worries about their self-positioning.

Lai Feng further pointed out that the spread of the new standards also reflected that the survival state of white-collar workers was not easy, and rest and entertainment had become luxuries for them. Busy work and complex interpersonal relationships forced them to give up pursuing ideals and left them no time to enjoy life. Therefore, Lai Feng suggested that busy white-collar workers try to squeeze out some time to "invest" in spiritual life, such as reading good books on the subway during commutes or attending a concert on weekends. These cultural activities would help white-collar workers reduce mental stress and improve their quality of life.
