The owner collapsed in the park and it kept wailing. It escorted its owner to the ambulance and into the emergency room. It guarded its owner's body alone in the morgue. The story of Hachiko, the faithful dog, has once again been played out in Chongqing. Yesterday at around 10 a.m., on the pathway of Futo Pass Park in Yuzhong District, a man suddenly collapsed while walking his dog. The dog kept circling around its owner and loudly "calling for help," which eventually led to them being discovered by passersby.
Continuously Circling
Never Leaving or Abandoning
Its "Call for Help" Attracted Pedestrians
Speaking about how they found the man, Mr. Li, a passerby, said that it was the dog's barking that caught his attention. "It was different from the usual barking of dogs; I could clearly sense some urgency." Mr. Li said he was exercising on the mountain path in Futo Pass Park at the time.
"Woof...woof...woo..." Mr. Li mimicked the initial sound of the dog's bark, with a drawn-out voice and a tearing tail sound. Mr. Li thought that the dog might be in danger at first. Following the sound, Mr. Li and fellow pedestrians found a man lying on the mountain path.
The man was wearing white pajamas and remained motionless on the ground. A small yellow Pekingese with thin fur was continuously circling around the man, looking very anxious.
"We didn't dare to get closer. Don't look at its small size, but it was quite fierce!" Mr. Li quickly took out his phone, checked the time, which was approximately 10 a.m., and dialed 120 (emergency services).
Never Leaving or Abandoning
"Escort" Its Owner onto the Ambulance
Ten minutes later, the ambulance from the city's emergency center arrived at the scene.
"We saw that the Pekingese's front paws were resting on its owner's body, constantly barking at its owner." Liao, the stretcher bearer, said that the dog seemed to be shouting at its owner, trying to wake him up. The medical staff prepared to approach and provide aid, but the Pekingese thought they were going to harm its owner and let out another round of furious barks towards those who approached.
"We had no choice but to use the stretcher to drive the little dog aside." As the rescue personnel treated the man, the Pekingese that was driven aside continued to circle around the rescuers, losing its previous hostility but refusing to leave.
After diagnosis, the man had no vital signs left. Since the man was alone, the rescue personnel had to call the police and then carried the man onto the stretcher. After walking one kilometer, they reached the ambulance. Along the way, the Pekingese followed closely behind.
"We lifted the person onto the vehicle, but the car was too high for the Pekingese to jump up." Mr. Liao said that finally, the agitated Pekingese blocked the ambulance. "This dog is so loyal and righteous!"
"Let it accompany its owner all the way!" Everyone picked up the dog and put it on the vehicle. As soon as the Pekingese got on the vehicle, it jumped onto its owner's body and refused to get down.
"Causing a Ruckus" at the Hospital
Everyone Pleaded for It, Breaking the Rules to Enter the Emergency Room
At around 10:40 a.m., the man was sent into the emergency operating room. Seeing the heavy door of the operating room close, the Pekingese kept barking loudly outside the door. "There are no family members?" A nurse shouted toward the outside. "He might have been walking the dog when he suddenly collapsed; only this dog was with him." The attending doctor replied.
"Let it go in! This dog is so well-behaved!" The onlookers among the patients and passersby stopped to plead for the dog.
"There is no other choice but to break the rules and let it in." Ultimately, the dog was exceptionally allowed into the emergency room. However, it was placed in a basket and obediently watched its owner without making any noise.
"The patient was eventually pronounced dead." The doctor looked at the Pekingese, not wanting to tell it, even though it probably wouldn't understand.
Guarding the Body
Accompanying the Owner One Last Time
The Pekingese followed the owner's body to the morgue. "We originally intended to take it to the duty room to take care of it until the family arrived. But the dog stayed on its owner's body the whole time, silent, its eyes fixed on the owner, showing sorrow." The on-duty doctor said.
An hour passed, and the door of the morgue opened, allowing a streak of light to shine inside. The Pekingese suddenly woke up, jumping off the coffin and running toward the door. "Goodness! You didn't get lost."
Originally, the man's wife and son had already arrived after receiving the notification. The Pekingese couldn't wait to jump into the arms of the female owner, trembling all over. "At first, it wasn't trembling; it must have been extremely shocked," the female owner said.
Two Years of Care
Greeting the Owner at the Door
The woman's eyes were already noticeably red and swollen. After her emotions slightly stabilized, the lady introduced herself as Zhang Meijuan, the man's wife.
Zhang Meijuan introduced that her husband, Mr. Hu, was 52 years old, and they lived in Liziba. Mr. Hu worked as a security guard in an inn in Shangqingsi. He was usually in good health, had a bit of diabetes, but it had been controlled through medication.
This Pekingese was named "Niu Niu," a female dog, given to Zhang Meijuan two years ago by her good friend. Since Niu Niu came into their home, she brought much joy to everyone. "She greeted us at the door every day when we went to work and returned home. Whenever Mr. Hu had rest days, he would take Niu Niu out for walks, and they were very affectionate with each other."
"Dogs truly understand human feelings." Unexpectedly, yesterday morning, Mr. Hu went out for a walk with the dog and never returned. Zhang Meijuan was comforted knowing that at least during her husband's passing, there was Niu Niu loyally accompanying him by his side.
At this point, Zhang Meijuan tightly hugged Niu Niu, who was shaking uncontrollably, trying to give her more warmth.
"Dogs are the most loyal. In a dog's world, there is only the owner. Regardless of whether the owner is wealthy or poor, noble or humble, it stays by the owner's side for life without leaving." Others remarked.
Yesterday afternoon, the reporter called Zhang Meijuan. She stated that they had already taken her husband's body home and were preparing to handle the funeral arrangements.
