Core Tip: At 11:30 AM on June 1st, a collapse accident occurred at a quarry in Jiujiang, Jiangxi. A 30-year-old female worker was trapped between two boulders weighing several tons each. It took the firefighters two hours to rescue her, but due to being trapped for too long, the woman passed away after unsuccessful resuscitation and did not get to see her child one last time.
On the morning of June 1st at 11:30 AM, a collapse accident happened at a quarry in Xiangu Tai, Xiafan Town, Ruichang City, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. A 30-year-old female worker was trapped between two boulders weighing several tons. The firefighters took two hours to rescue her, but because she was trapped for too long, she unfortunately passed away after unsuccessful medical efforts.
According to local workers, around 11:30 AM on June 1st, they were shoveling soil at a quarry in Xiafan Town when suddenly, massive boulders weighing several tons loosened and slid down. The workers fled upon hearing the commotion, but soon after, a desperate cry for help was heard. A few minutes later, seeing that the boulders had stopped moving, two brave workers ran back to find a female worker trapped in a crevice with only half of her body visible. Her chest and waist were crushed under two enormous rocks. Since the boulders weighed several tons, it was impossible to move them manually, and the surrounding stones had already loosened, risking a secondary collapse if handled carelessly. Therefore, the workers had no choice but to call emergency services for help.
At 11:40 AM, the Ruichang Fire Brigade received the alarm and quickly dispatched a rescue vehicle with six officers rushing to the scene. Deputy Mayor Guo Shaoxiong of Ruichang City also arrived promptly to organize and direct the rescue operation. Since the incident location was on top of a mountain where vehicles couldn't reach, the commander immediately ordered all combatants to carry rescue equipment such as jacks, hydraulic demolition tools, and stretchers up the mountain on foot.
When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw the boulder had tightly pinned the female worker's chest and waist. Her face had turned somewhat rosy, and she was in a state of shock. The boulder stood on a small slope, very unstable, and any slight movement could cause it to slide, potentially triggering a larger collapse, bringing greater danger.
By this time, over an hour had passed since the female worker was trapped. Subsequently arriving medical personnel administered basic first aid and started an IV drip for her. With her fading breath, the female worker tearfully kept requesting: "Quickly bring my child here, let me see him one last time!" Everyone present was deeply moved, and her husband, in tears, continuously consoled her.
After determining the rescue plan, the firefighters and construction workers immediately began their rescue operations. The firefighters and construction workers first jointly cleared the smaller stones above the boulder, then placed two jacks into the cracks of the boulder and gradually applied pressure. Despite the increasing hydraulic force, the boulder remained immovable, so the firefighters brought three more jacks.
It was nearly impossible to directly "pull" the female worker out from the crevice. After multiple inspections of the site, the on-site commander discussed rescue strategies with the quarry manager and decided to use a loader within the quarry to stabilize a boulder below to prevent another collapse. They also established observation posts to monitor the surroundings continuously.
After a tense and arduous rescue effort, at 1:28 PM, the female worker was finally rescued. However, due to being trapped for too long, she passed away after unsuccessful resuscitation by the on-site emergency doctors. It was learned that the female worker was from Nanyang Township, Ruichang City, and was 30 years old. Currently, the aftermath work is ongoing.
The female worker was carried down after being rescued. Due to being trapped for too long, she passed away despite the rescue attempts.
