First, avoid panic.

In the event of a fire, it is essential to remain calm and not panic or act chaotically. Do not blindly get up and run away or jump from the building. Understand your location and promptly assess the size of the fire and its spreading direction. Based on this information, choose an escape method and route accordingly.

Second, avoid shouting blindly.

Since modern buildings use large amounts of wood, plastic, chemical fibers, and other flammable materials for interior decoration, and these materials are often painted, they release a lot of smoke and toxic gases when burned, which can easily cause death by toxic gas asphyxiation. Therefore, during evacuation, you can fold a wet towel to cover your nose and mouth, hold your breath, and filter out the smoke. Do not shout loudly unless in an emergency, and keep the towel over your nose and mouth. You must crawl forward to escape.

Third, avoid being attached to possessions.

When escaping, do not waste time dressing or looking for valuable items, nor carry heavy items that may slow down your escape speed. More importantly, do not return to the fire scene after having escaped.

Fourth, avoid opening windows and doors randomly.

During refuge, never open windows and doors. If the refuge area is full of smoke and cannot be used, you can open the windows and doors on the side of the fire to vent the smoke, but immediately close them afterward. Otherwise, a large amount of dense smoke will enter the room, reducing visibility and making it impossible to hide due to high temperatures.

Fifth, avoid using elevators.

Do not take the elevator casually. Once there's a fire, the power supply to the elevator may be cut off, likely trapping people inside without any means of escape.

Sixth, avoid running around aimlessly.

In a fire, never run around aimlessly, as it could easily lead to being engulfed by flames and also create new fire points, causing the fire to spread. If your clothes catch fire, remove them immediately or roll on the ground to extinguish the flames. Alternatively, pour water over yourself, wrap yourself in a wet blanket or clothing to smother the flames.

Seventh, avoid choosing the wrong direction.

Escape should be from higher to lower areas. When escaping, go from higher floors to lower ones, because fire spreads upward. The flames will burn upward from the bottom to the top of the building. The upward spread speed of the fire in renovated floors is generally faster than the speed at which people can escape upwards. If you cannot reach the rooftop, the flames will surround you. If unavoidable, escape to the rooftop and stand in the upwind direction.

Eighth, avoid jumping from heights lightly.

If the fire breaches the refuge area and makes it impossible to seek refuge, do not make a hasty decision to jump from the building. At this point, you can hold onto the balcony or window sill and flip out of the window to seek survival.
