December 9th, Beijing time, the International Badminton Federation today announced the host cities of the Badminton World Championships for 2013 and 2014. Guangzhou has won the right to host the 2013 World Championship, while Copenhagen, Denmark, will host the 2014 event. The hosting rights for the 2013 Sudirman Cup went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Among the cities that applied to host the 2013 World Championship were Guangzhou, Macao in China, and Copenhagen, Denmark. The latter two also applied for the hosting rights of the 2014 World Championship. Ultimately, after voting, Guangzhou and Copenhagen won the hosting rights for the 2013 and 2014 World Championships respectively. It is worth noting that this is the first time in 26 years that China will again host the Badminton World Championships. The last time China hosted was in 1987, when the event took place in Beijing. Copenhagen will also host the World Championships again after 15 years; the city last hosted the event in 1999.

Guangzhou's acquisition of the 2013 World Championship hosting rights also set a record, making it the first city in China to host all three major badminton events (Thomas and Uber Cups, Sudirman Cup, and World Championships). The hosting rights for the 2013 Sudirman Cup went to Kuala Lumpur, marking the first time Malaysia will host the Sudirman Cup.
