Report by journalist Duan Xiujian: Yesterday evening, on an overpass east of Liujiayao Bridge on South Third Ring East Road, a girl accidentally fell through a gap in the railing and was run over by a passing car underneath the bridge. Hospital emergency staff indicated that the girl suffered serious head injuries and her life was still in danger.
A vendor on the overpass recalled hearing someone shouting "a child has fallen!" Around 5:30 PM yesterday evening, a girl who was playing near the eastern railing of the overpass slipped and fell through the gap.
Witnesses stated that upon noticing, the girl's parents immediately ran down the bridge. At this time, a black sedan stopped on the innermost lane traveling westbound on the east side of the bridge. The girl's father found his daughter under the car and pulled her out. The girl had bleeding on her head and her body was limp.
The girl's father flagged down a taxi to take her to the hospital. The driver of the car remained at the scene and later accepted investigation by the traffic police.
The vendor introduced that the girl was about four years old, from Hebei province, and her parents usually set up stalls on the overpass.
The vendor mentioned that the railing had been damaged for quite some time.
At around 7 PM yesterday, the black sedan was still parked at the scene as the traffic police were investigating. There was a gap left by the damaged railings on both sides of the overpass.
Witnesses said that the car driver told the traffic police that the vehicle was traveling normally at the time of the incident.
Last night, the emergency surgery doctor at Tiying Hospital said that the girl was unconscious with severe brain injuries and had not yet escaped life-threatening danger. She had already been transferred to another hospital.
A vendor who has been setting up stalls on the overpass for a long time claimed that the railing had been damaged for more than half a year and had not been repaired.
Last night, the reporter was unable to contact the relevant responsible units for the overpass.
