Experts from the Yangzhou Armed Police Hospital's Anorectal Center introduced that anal fissures are a common anorectal disease, mainly affecting young and middle-aged adults, but children can also be afflicted. The elderly are less likely to suffer from it. According to statistics from Europe and America, women are more prone to this condition than men, but according to clinical observations in China, men are affected more often than women. What are the causes of anal fissures? Experts from Nanjing Armed Police Hospital's Anorectal Center have summarized them as follows:
1. Constipation: Among the factors causing anal fissures, constipation is the biggest culprit. According to experts from Yangzhou Armed Police Hospital, long-term retention of feces in the rectum not only can induce rectal cancer, but the accumulation of feces can also affect blood circulation. Patients who strain to pass dry feces will inevitably put great pressure on the anus, leading to a series of pathological changes such as tears and swelling.
2. Poor bowel habits: Many people like to read books or newspapers while squatting on the toilet, which prolongs the time spent squatting and defecating, easily causing congestion in the anus and rectum, thus inducing diseases. Smoking during bowel movements can buffer the brain's defecation reflex, leading to constipation. Straining too hard during bowel movements, regardless of the intensity of the urge, blindly and continuously straining will only increase unnecessary burdens and local congestion in the rectum, anus, and pelvic floor muscles, leading to the occurrence and development of anal fissures.
3. Infection factors: Acute and chronic anal sinusitis, anal papillitis, internal hemorrhoids, and polyps are the main causes of infection. Pathogenic bacteria enter the anal gland through the glandular opening, forming an abscess in the subcutaneous tissue of the anal canal, which then ruptures to form an ulcer. Small superficial thrombi due to infection can cause thrombophlebitis, also leading to the occurrence of anal fissures.
4. Human anatomical factors: The external sphincter muscle of the human anus extends forward from the coccyx to the posterior part of the anal canal, divides into two parts, and wraps around the anal canal along both sides, meeting at the front of the anal canal. There are gaps left at the front and back of the anal canal. Most of the levator ani muscles attach to both sides of the anal canal, with fewer attachments at the front and back. The posterior and anterior parts of the anal canal are not as strong as the sides, making them more susceptible to injury. The anal canal descends and tilts backward to form the anorectal angle, where the posterior part of the anal canal is subjected to greater fecal pressure. The posterior midline of the anal canal lacks blood supply and has less elasticity, all contributing to the formation of anal fissures.
Experts from the Nanjing Armed Police Hospital appeal for regular exercise and maintaining good dietary habits to ensure health. Experts from Yangzhou Armed Police Hospital's Anorectal Center pointed out that when anal fissures occur, the main symptoms are pain and bleeding, causing much suffering to patients. It is advisable to seek treatment at large, professional hospitals as soon as possible to avoid worsening the condition.
