The architectural element of the staircase is becoming increasingly prominent during its reconstruction, showcasing its unique position in the world. This also brings a new design challenge to interior designers. A staircase is simply a passage that allows people to move smoothly between two spaces. It must be designed fairly and reasonably. According to standards, each step of the staircase should be 15 cm high and 28 cm wide. However, in real life, such ideal conditions are rarely seen. Therefore, it is necessary for designers to have a thorough understanding and control of the dimensions in order to design a staircase that is convenient to walk on while occupying minimal space. In practice, the height of the staircase steps should be less than 18 cm and the width should be greater than 22 cm; otherwise, it will be difficult for us to walk on.

Designers often fall into a misconception, thinking that staircase design is merely about calculations and dimensions. In fact, this understanding is very narrow. Staircase design includes many aspects, ranging from the overall spatial style and form, to the details like handrail styles, step forms, and types of lighting. Missing any one of these elements may lead to failure.

Currently, Qingdao solid wood staircases mainly include several types: in terms of form, there are turning staircases, straight-run staircases, curved staircases, and same-shaped staircases. For top-floor loft-style residential spaces with relatively smaller areas, turning staircases and straight-run staircases are generally more suitable. For larger spaces like villas or duplex residences, grander curved staircases can be chosen. As shown in the figure, this is a duplex residence with a top-floor loft. The original staircase location was not ideal. After some adjustments and modifications by the designer, a relatively larger space was obtained. The designer installed a large-curved steel-frame staircase between the ground floor and the second floor, and a straight-run staircase from the second floor to the loft. The bas-relief on the staircase background adds a unique charm, making the entire staircase come alive.

In terms of materials, the main types are wooden staircases, steel-frame staircases, and concrete-poured staircases. Considering the cost, wooden and concrete-poured staircases are more affordable, while steel-frame staircases are easier to construct and have diverse appearances.

An ordinary residence can appear majestic and full of vitality due to an exquisitely designed staircase. One might say that the staircase is the soul of multi-level residential design. Although a staircase may just be an ordinary structure in daily life, it can be transformed through design into another highlight that decorates the house, even becoming an art form.
